E. Dean Smock, 90, of Conneautville, passed away peacefully, to be with the Lord on March 8, 2024. He was born on December 11, 1933, in Geneva, PA, to the late Virgil and Gladys (Williams) Smock.
The family moved to Spring Township on New Year’s Eve in 1941. Dean graduated from Conneaut Valley High School in 1951 where he served as senior class president. He excelled on the school football team playing “End” position and was a valuable team member during the “Save an Eye” football game, in Erie, during his senior year.
Dean’s diverse employment history over his lifetime included working an after school job at the Conneautville Drug Store, roadside mowing for the state highway system (using his own tractor), plowing snow, and holding varied positions on the Bessemer Railroad and at the Sealtest plant in Springboro.
In 1968 he obtained a position at PPG and for the next 25 years held supervisory positions prior to taking a necessary medical retirement. In addition to his everyday employment, Dean found time to become a certified electrician in PA and OH and worked side jobs in the heating and plumbing industry, masonry and carpentry. Dean was well known for his strong work ethic and willingness to donate his time and skills to his community and those in need.
Dean was an avid sports fan and enthusiastically supported his family’s sports endeavors. He coached his sons little league team, winning 4 championship titles. He was also a lifelong Cleveland Browns and Indians fan.
He was a self-taught guitarist and accomplished vocalist performing at many church and public functions. Dean and his wife were members of the Conneautville Church of Christ for over 60 years, where he served faithfully in the appointed positions of Elder and Deacon. He was a member of the Conneaut Valley Masonic Lodge for over 60 years and a member of the Lions Club who enjoyed assisting with community blood drives and fund raisers. Dean’s dedication to serving his community, his unwavering love for family and friends, his immense joy for life and his gleaming smile will not soon be forgotten.
He is survived by his beloved wife Wilma of 70 years and his two sons Sidney (Dawn) Smock and Shelby (Jerian) Smock. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Amber (Michael) Kramer and Amy (Brandon) Needler, six great-grandchildren, Alex, Joey, Jackson, and Kendall Kramer, McKenna (Levi) Butryn and Brooklyn Needler, three sisters, Betty Bartlett, Marilyn Sue Thomas and Joyce Nichols, two brothers, Virgil (Kay) Smock and Dennis (Sharon) Smock as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Ora Lee Kress, Eleanor Laird, Erma Graff and Donna Murphy.
Friends and family may call on Thursday March 14, 2024 from 10:00AM-12:00 Noon and from 5:00PM-7:00PM with a funeral service on Friday at 11:00AM at the Conneautville Church of Christ, 1308 Main St. Conneautville, PA 16406 with Pastor Rich Jones officiating. A graveside service will follow at the Spring Cemetery in Springboro, PA.
